Cup Competitions in soccer are unique; a mini season within a season.  I really can’t think of an equivalent in other major sports.  Cup ties are always competitive games, because winners advance and losers are knocked out.  Cup competitions also offer hope- a season that otherwise would have been deemed unsuccessful can be saved by a nice run in the cup.  Most Importantly, Cup Competitions offer more fixtures.
