henry

Photo by klaatu According to a report by the Boston Globe, Thierry Henry will be joining the New York Red Bulls after the World Cup. Henry will be a strong addition to the Eastern Conference’s current first place team. More details to come as they are released.

After a few days of constant groaning, the US Open Cup play-in match between the Philadelphia Union and New York Red Bulls is now watchable via live stream. Although I’d prefer a TV, at this point I’ll take anything. The game is streamable by clicking here and then clicking the “MLS Live” tab around 8:00pm. Someone finally listened.  Unfortunately, it was the New York Red Bulls brass, but I’ll take what I can get.

My favorite player so far this season has been Roger Torres, the 18 year old player on loan from Colombia’s America de Cali. He’s started each of the Union’s four games and played quite well, notching two assists so far. Along with veteran forwards Sebastian Le Toux and Alejandro Moreno, he has been the engine of Philly’s impressive attack. Le Toux and Moreno’s contributions have been more obvious, but Torres’s work in the midfield, bridging…

Our Philadelphia Union continue to play impressive soccer- better, for the most part, than that of their opponents.  Despite this, they also continue to lose to them. A fantastic game spoiled by key errors once again describes an away defeat for the boys in blue; this time to our likely arch-rivals, the unfortunately named New York Red Bulls.  While the Union performed admirably in terms of possession, chances created, and defensive firmness, New York was…

With their regular season record now standing at 1-2, the Union are at a crossroads in their young season.  A win will move them to a .500 record and within striking distance in the East, but a loss will drop them to the bottom of the table.  For a young team still searching for their identity, it is crucial to stay in the hunt during these early weeks.  Nothing can damage team morale quite like a…

Photo By Robert Francis 1. Chris Seitz must have a good game. I’m not talking great. I’m not expecting him to make ESPN’s Top 10 Plays list. He just needs to have a solid game. I don’t expect New York to generate a lot of quality shots, but he needs to save the ones that are savable. If Seitz lets up an early soft goal, it could finally be the soft goal that demoralizes this…

Being severely allergic to crack, despair, and New York envy, the boys of PhillyUnionTalk.com are unable to travel to North Jersey this weekend.  What to do?  After considering the options (watching from our homes, watching from a pub, or re-enacting the game through squirrel puppetry), we’ve decided the best course of action.  We’ll be cheering the Union on to victory at our personal favorite spot, the Dark Horse Pub.  Dark Horse has been there for…

I’ve always had a problem with math, ever since I was a kid.  In 3rd grade, I was constantly being duped by the math whizzes: getting cheated out of lunch money, being lied to about what time it was (damn analog clocks), trading a “meter” of my precious fruit roll-up for the square root of the class hamster, etc.  While many of these children went on to found Lehman Brothers, I became a sports blogger. …

Cup Competitions in soccer are unique; a mini season within a season.  I really can’t think of an equivalent in other major sports.  Cup ties are always competitive games, because winners advance and losers are knocked out.  Cup competitions also offer hope- a season that otherwise would have been deemed unsuccessful can be saved by a nice run in the cup.  Most Importantly, Cup Competitions offer more fixtures. Now that I’m using Union games as…
