PPL-Park u

Tumultuous.  Turbulent.  Turgid. Two of those adjectives can be used to describe this whirlwind of an offseason.  The other may look  like cheap alliteration, but it refers to the visceral, testosterone-laden anger at the Front Office that has left many a fan sporting an undeniable rage-boner. The question isn’t whether or not those actually exist, but whether or not they’re warranted.  The names Mondragon, Mwanga, Nakazawa, Paunovic, Adu, Daniel, Gomez, Khalfan, Lopez, Martinez, Torres - not to mention Houapeu, Richter, Langley, Hoffman, Jordan, Gaddis and…

As the offseason winds down and first kick approaches, let’s take a moment to remember the loved and lost: Mapp, Justin Mapp was taken from us on November 23rd, 2011.  A dynamic winger with the occasional ability to control the ball, Mapp was left unprotected and was subsequently picked up by the barely existent Montreal Impact in the MLS Expansion Draft.  Enduring a lifelong struggle with male pattern baldness, he nonetheless managed to produce for the Union,…

In a record-breakingly packed PPL, the U nabbed a point from a Beckham-less Galaxy, in what was probably the most thrilling 15 minutes of the season so far.

The Union drop their first three points of the season, and in doing so expose their most consequential weaknesses. Let’s hope the first real test was an impetus to improve and not a sign of things to come.

Toux Bad

In what is probably the second worst miscarriage of justice involving both soccer and a French person, Sebastien Le Toux has been left off of the short list for MLS MVP.  Edson Buddle of the LA Galaxy, David Ferreira of FC Dallas, and Chris Wondolowski the of San Jose Earthquakes are the final candidates. Even with our obvious pro-Union bias, no one here expected Le Toux to take the title.  But to be left out of the…

So….question:  is it cool to be supportive of opposing team members for whom you have admiration?  Is it ok to even admire someone on another team?  Obviously I’m not talking about cheering for an enemy during the run of play- if the greatest, classiest footballing phenom in the world were charging toward’s the Union’s goal, I’d wanna see him get flattened like a Lorenzo’s pizza at 2 AM, admiration notwithstanding. The reason we pose the…

So, the Union lost to LA.  1-0.  There’s neither shame nor surprise in this. What was pleasant to see is that the Union lost like men.  Of course they’ve always done that; almost every loss they’ve incurred happened despite their characteristic doggedness and resolve.  But THIS time, not only did the U lose with heart- they lost with dignity. They lost like professionals, not like an expansion team with growing pains.  They didn’t lose because…
