Continuing the Re-Entry Draft saga, the mono-monikered midfielder Fred was swept away by the New England Revolution. This was unsurprising, as the Union had little motivation to hang on to him given his salary to performance ratio. Topping the pay scale at $282,000, and originally predicted to be a central component of the team’s attack, he contributed only 4 goals and 1 assist. The U couldn’t afford not to lose him.

So, the Union lost to LA. 1-0. There’s neither shame nor surprise in this. What was pleasant to see is that the Union lost like men. Of course they’ve always done that; almost every loss they’ve incurred happened despite their characteristic doggedness and resolve. But THIS time, not only did the U lose with heart- they lost with dignity. They lost like professionals, not like an expansion team with growing pains. They didn’t lose because…

The tie against FC Dallas felt like a win. The one against New England felt like a loss. This one, for all its missed opportunities, actually felt like a straight-up honest draw. That’s not to say the U couldn’t have won this one. The main reason they didn’t can be chalked up to (you guessed it) a laughable-if-I-wasn’t-crying defensive error. Shocking, I know. But we’ll get to that. First, the good part. Danny Mwanga- what…

As was mostly expected, the Union have officially declared super-striker Sebastien Le Toux unfit for tomorrow’s match against the LA Galaxy. The silver lining is that benching him is a precautionary measure to avoid turning what is a minor injury into a major one; Le Toux should be back in action shortly. The challenge ahead of Nowak & company, then, is deciding what to do with our lineup. Alejandro Moreno will have to do some heavy lifting…

What’s done is done. Danny Califf’s red card happened, and it’s over with. It supplied us here at PhillyUnionTalk.com with some great material, but it’s time we move on and play the hand we were dealt. The most hotly debated topic at the bar last night: Who’s going to captain the team for the crucial away game against the Red Bulls? This is an interesting one because there are a couple of good choices, but there is no clear…

I have a rule. It’s a self imposed rule. NO WRITING ABOUT BAD LOSSES RIGHT AFTER THEY HAPPEN. This personal guideline is necessary due to the fact that many of my match reports after big losses went something like, “They all suck and fire the manager too.” If I wrote a match report last night, it would have sounded like this- “The Goalkeeper is a clown, and the Captain is a goon. Philadelphia Union beat themselves”. For this reason,…
