Addicts will tell you that no one can start on the path to redemption until they hit bottom. In the latest installment of the embattled Union’s descent into the depths of the Eastern Conference, the Chicago Fire put a fine point on the realization that’s now dawning across the Delaware Valley- that the salad days are gone. We probably have more heartache to endure before things get better. Let’s not fret about it too much….

I have never understood the phenomenon of naming sports teams after catastrophic events. The San Jose Earthquakes, the Carolina Hurricanes, and the New England Patriot Acts remind locals of sad, tragic events. The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 killed hundreds of people and obliterated over 3 square miles of the city. Isn’t a bit insensitive to wag that type of imagery in the face of a city that was almost destroyed? Anyways, the Philadelphia Union…

Apparently we can come away from Chicago with one thing- a new midfielder. 25-year old Justin Mapp is all ours, at the cost of some of that allocation money that’s been burning a hole in Pete Nowak’s pocket. I have, in the past, blasted the Union after some losses during this campaign, but not this week. Even though the Union ultimately lost another game this Saturday, I have nothing negative to say. I am going to give them praise for a game they came up short in. The Chicago Fire are an established MLS franchise, and the Union looked like the better squad from the first kick. The Fire’s tactics were almost anti-football….

In 1974 Muhammad Ali faced upstart champion George Foreman in the historic Rumble in the Jungle boxing fight in Zaire. Big George was an imposing figure with heavy fists; metaphors fail to convey the kind of hurt he tucked into his gloves before stepping into the ring. But Ali was a crafty, experienced technician. He had a plan to neutralize his opponent. Lying on the ropes absorbing attacks, Ali allowed Foreman to punch himself out,…

Saturday our boys travel to the Windy City (actually an adjacent Windy Suburb) to tackle the Chicago Fire. There will be a lot to play for, and plenty to look for. There’s a few ways in which this match-up is both more vital and more interesting than your average regular-season clash between a 5th and 7th place team: Our place in the Conference: Yes, we are second to last. Only the god-awful embarrasment to humanity that is D.C….
